  • Around each numerator
  • Around each denominator
  • Around each exponent
  • Around each expression to which an exponent applies. (Note that "expression" is italicized. If an exponent applies to just a variable, you do not need to put parentheses around the variable.)

Without these parenthese there are just too many ways to interpret "(x-1)^1/2-x(1/2)(x-1)^-1/2/x-1". Taken literally, "(x-1)^1/2-x(1/2)(x-1)^-1/2/x-1" means:
