Going into the final exam, Joann has test scores of 80,84,71,65,and 90. If the final exam is 45% of the overall grade, what does Joann have to score to have a final average of 87?

If the weight of the final exam is 45%, then the weight of all the other exams must be 55%. Since there are 5 other exams, each of them is worth 55 divided by 5 equals 11%.

So you can write the following equation:



Solve for and you have your answer. She is going to have to do a LOT better than what she averaged on the first 5 exams.
