Question 214314: I am having a hard time trying to figure this problem out. It would be greatly appreciated if you could assist me. This question is from a work book not the text book:

Brass is an alloy made up of copper and zinc in varying proportions. How much brass containing 75.5% copper must be combined with a different brass containing 86.3% copper to make 5250kg of brass containing 80.0% copper

Brass is an alloy made up of copper and zinc in varying proportions. How much brass containing 75.5% copper must be combined with a different brass containing 86.3% copper to make 5250kg of brass containing 80.0% copper
--------------------------------------
Equation:
copper + copper = copper
0.755x + 0.863(5250-x) = 0.80*5250
--------------------------------------
Multiply thru by 1000 to get:
755x + 863*5250 - 863x = 800*5250
-108x = -63*5250
x = 3062.5 kg (amt. of 75.5% copper in the mixture)
---
5250-3062.5 = 2187.5 kg (amt of 86.3% copper in the mixture)

One way to approach these kinds of problems is to write down the amounts of copper (Cu) there are in the different brass alloys. Let x = the amount of the brass with 75.5% Cu.
The amount of amount of Cu in x kgs of this alloy can be expressed as:
x%280.755%29kg of Cu.
The amount of Cu in the other 86.3% Cu-brass alloy can be expressed as:
%285250-x%29%280.863%29kg. of Cu.
The sum of these two amounts is to equal 5250 kg of 80% Cu-brass.
So we can write the equation to find x.
0.755x%2B0.863%285250-x%29+=+0.8%285250%29 Simplify and solve for x.
0.755x%2B4530.75-0.863x+=+4200
-0.108x%2B4530.75+=+4200 Subtract 4530.75 from both sides.
-0.108x+=+-330.75 Divide both sides by -0.108
highlight%28x+=+3062.5%29kg of the brass with 75.5% Cu.
