Question 214308: how can I solve this linear equation word problem:
Max bought 16 lbs of nuts at a party. max brought some peanuts and some alomonds. the total cost was $60. the Peanit cost 3 pr lbs and the Al $ 5 per lbs.
using elimination solve the system of equations to find how many pounds of each type of nuts Max brought. Answer by stanbon(75887) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Max bought 16 lbs of nuts at a party. max brought some peanuts and some almonds. the total cost was $60. the Peanuts cost $3 per lbs and the
Almonds $5 per lb.
using elimination solve the system of equations to find how many pounds of each type of nuts Max brought.
---
Quantity Equation: p + a = 16
Value Equation::: 3p + 5a = 60
--------------------------------------
Multiply thru the Quantity Equation by 3 to get:
3p + 3a = 48
---
Subtract that from the Value Equation to get:
2a = 12
a = 4 lbs (amount of almonds in the mix)
---
Substitute into p+a = 16 to solve for p:
p + 4 = 16
p = 12 lbs. (amount of peanuts in the mix)
