Yes, I think you are at least half-right, and here is why:

Digits must be positive integers less than or equal to 9.

There are only two three-factor factorizations of the number 40 where all three factors qualify as digits, namely 5 * 8 * 1 and 5 * 4 * 2. The sums are respectively 14 and 11. Obviously 12 is an inappropriate number for the sum of the digits, but it is nearly as likely that the corrected typo would be 14 as 11.
