Question 212836: This is not from a book. On the 2nd day of class the teacher gave us a work sheet to see what we remembered over the summer. This one has me stumped. Yet if we show our steps as to how we got the answer and prove it we get 3 points.
y4 +5y3 +6y2 / y + 2
(y squared plus 5y cubed plus 6y double divided by y plus 2)
I don't have a clue on this one.
Thank you

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
%28y%5E4+%2B5y%5E3+%2B6y%5E2%29+%2F+%28y+%2B+2%29+

The first step is to FACTOR. Take out a COMMON FACTOR of y%5E2in the numerator.

%28y%5E2%28y2+%2B5y+%2B6%29%29+%2F+%28y+%2B+2%29

Now, factor the trinomial in the numerator:
%28y%5E2%28y%2B2%29%28y%2B3%29%29%2F%28y%2B2%29

Divide out the factor of (y+2).

Final answer: %28y%5E2%28y%2B3%29%29%2F1= y%5E2%28y%2B3%29

If you need an informal explanation of Factoring or Fractions, together with examples, exercises and answers, please see my own website. Do a "Bing" search for my last name "Rapalje" and look for "Rapalje Homepage" near the top of the search list. Click on the link "Basic, Intermediate and College Algebra: One Step at a Time" near the top of my Homepage. Select "Basic Algebra", and look in "Chapter 2" for the topics of Factoring, and "Chapter 3" for Fractions. Also, check out my "MATH IN LIVING COLOR" pages on these topics to see solutions to a lot of these problems, IN COLOR of course!
