YOUR ANSWER

  • This is an equation! Solutions: Y=0.
  • Graphical form: Y=abs%28-3%2B1%29-2 simplifies to 1=0
  • Text form: Y=abs(-3+1)-2 simplifies to 1=0
  • Cartoon (animation) form: simplify_cartoon%28+Y=abs%28-3%2B1%29-2+%29
    For tutors: simplify_cartoon( Y=abs(-3+1)-2 )
  • If you have a website, here's a link to this solution.

DETAILED EXPLANATION

Look at Y=abs%28-highlight_red%28+3+%29%2Bhighlight_red%28+1+%29%29-2.
Added fractions or integers together
It becomes Y=abs%28highlight_green%28+-2+%29%29-2.

Look at Y=highlight_red%28+abs%28-2%29+%29-highlight_red%28+2+%29.
Replace constants in expression: highlight_red%28+abs%28-2%29+%29,highlight_red%28+-2+%29 with highlight_green%28+0+%29
It becomes Y=highlight_green%28+0+%29.

Look at highlight_red%28+Y+%29=0.
Notes known roots (Y-(0))

Look at highlight_red%28+%281%29+%29=0.
Remove unneeded parentheses around terms highlight_red%28+1+%29
It becomes highlight_green%28+1+%29=0.
Result: 1=0
This is an equation! Solutions: Y=0.

Y= |-3+1| - 2

Step 1. Think of absolute value as a distance...it's always positive even if the negative value inside the absolute value symbols |negative| is positive.

Step 2. Y=|-3+1| - 2 = |-2|-2=2-2=0

Step 3. Y=0 is the answer.
