: Johnny leaves Memphis to visit Anne, who lives in Hornsby, TN, 80 miles away. He travels at an average speed of 50 mph. One-half hour later, Anne leaves to visit Johnny, traveling at an average speed of 60 mph. How long after Anne leaves will it be before they meet?
I have tried to work this a few ways and I know that due to Johnny's speed of 50 mph, he gets 25 miles closer to Anne in the half hour he is traveling before she starts. After that I am lost.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Johnny leaves Memphis to visit Anne, who lives in Hornsby, TN, 80 miles away.
He travels at an average speed of 50 mph. One-half hour later,
Anne leaves to visit Johnny, traveling at an average speed of 60 mph.
How long after Anne leaves will it be before they meet?
:
Let t = Anne's travel time
then
(t+.5) = John's travel time (half hour longer the Anne)
:
When they meet, they will have traveled a total of 80 mi
:
Write a distance equation: Dist = speed * time
:
J's dist + A's dist = 80 mi
50(t+.5) + 60t = 80
50t + 25 + 60t = 80
50t + 60t = 80 - 25
110t = 55
t = 55%2F110
t = 1%2F2 hr is A's travel time
;
:
Check solution by finding the total dist:
60*.5 = 30
50*(.5+.5) = 50 mi
-----------------
total dist 80 mi
