based on past experience, approximately 17/50 * 100% of the violent crimes committed last year were assaults.
that would be 34%

Well, if you add up the number of crimes reported here:
9 Homicides.
24 Robberies.
17 Assaults.
----------------
41 crimes. But the report says there were 50 violent crimes, so we take that as the total.
Of these 50 violent crimes, 17 were assaults, so the probability that the next violent crime will be an assault is:
