Question 210937: Steve averaged 75 mph on the way to visit his parents. On the way back he averaged 65 mph and it took him 30 minutes longer. What was the total time for the trip? How far does Steve live from his parents?
let x be the distance to parents house.
75x = 65(x+30)
75x = 65x+1950
10x = 1950
x= 195
unfortunately, when I check my work by substituting 195 for x on both sides of the equation, the answers aren't equal to eachother. where did I go wrong?

You can put this solution on YOUR website! let x be the distance to parents house.
75x = 65(x+30)
75x = 65x+1950
10x = 1950
x= 195
unfortunately, when I check my work by substituting 195 for x on both sides of the equation, the answers aren't equal to eachother. where did I go wrong?
-----------------
The speeds are miles/hour, but the 30 is minutes.
let x be the distance to parents house.
75x = 65(x+0.5)
75x = 65x+32.5
10x = 32.5
x= 3.25 miles
----------
Check:
75*3.25 =? 65*3.75
