Question 210893: A tight end can run the 100 yard dash in 12 seconds. A defensive back can do it in 10 seconds. The tight end catches pass at his own 20 yard line with the defensive back at the 15 yard line. If no other players are nearby, at what yard line will the defensive back catch up to the tight end?
The teacher told us the answer is the 45 yard line but we have to figure out how to get that and I can't figure it out. Thank you for your help.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
for the tight end:
d%5Bt%5D+=+r%5Bt%5D%2At%5Bt%5D
for the defensive back:
d%5Bd%5D+=+r%5Bd%5D%2At%5Bd%5D
given:
r%5Bt%5D+=+100%2F12 yds/sec
r%5Bd%5D+=+100%2F10 yds/sec
The times are the same since they
will run for the same amount of time
Call both times t
d%5Bt%5D+=+d%5Bd%5D+-+5 yds
Rewrite equations
d%5Bt%5D+=+r%5Bt%5D%2At%5Bt%5D
d%5Bd%5D+-+5+=+%28100%2F12%29%2At
d%5Bd%5D+=+%28100%2F10%29%2At
By substitution
%28100%2F10%29%2At+-+5+=+%28100%2F12%29%2At
Multiply both sides by 120
1200t+-+600+=+1000t
200t+=+600
t+=+3 sec
d%5Bt%5D+=+r%5Bt%5D%2At%5Bt%5D
d%5Bt%5D+=+%28100%2F12%29%2A3
d%5Bt%5D+=+25 yds
and
d%5Bd%5D+=+%28100%2F10%29%2A3
d%5Bd%5D+=+30
The tight end runs from his 20 yd line for 25 yds
and gets to the 45 yd line in 3 sec
The defensive back runs for his 15 yd line for
30 yds and gets to the 45 yd line in 3 sec
