You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Linda can stuff 1000 envelopes in 6 hours. If Laura helps her,
they can both stuff 1000 envelopes in 5 ½ hours.
How long would it take Laura to stuff 1000 envelopes by herself?
:
Let x = time required by Laura working alone
Let the completed job = 1 (The stuffing of 1000 envelopes)
:
5.5%2F6 + 5.5%2Fx = 1
multiply equation by 6x
5.5x + 5.5(6) = 6x
5.5x + 33 = 6x
33 = 6x - 5.5x
33 = .5x
x = 33%2F.5
x = 66 hrs if Laura worked alone
:
Check solution in work equation:
5.5%2F6 + 5.5%2F66 =
.9167 + .0833 = 1.00

Obviously, Laura is not much help, must have other redeeming qualities.
