You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Johnny canoes down the American River with the current of 10km/hr in 6 hours.
The return trip back up the River takes 15 hours.
What is the rate of the canoe on the return trip?
:
let s = canoe speed in still water
then
(x+10) = his speed downstream
and
(x-10) = his speed upstream
:
The trip distance is the same downstream and upstream;
Write a distance equation, Dist = time * speed
;
up dist = down dist
15(s-10) = 6(s+10)
15s - 150 = 6s + 60
15s - 6s = 60 + 150
9s = 210
s = 210%2F9
s = 231%2F3 km/hr his speed in still water
then
231%2F3 - 10 = 131%2F3 km/hr on the return trip

You can check our solution by finding the actual dist:
6*33.333 = 200 mi
15*13.333 = 200 mi
