(a) Determine the air temperature at a height of 1 mile if the ground temperature is 70 degrees F. (b) At what altitude is the temperature freezing.
I'm not sure what number to plug in for "T", but the answer is 6909 feet. Thank you for any help! :)

(a) Determine the air temperature at a height of 1 mile if the ground temperature is 70 degrees F.
To = 70
h = 5280 (1 mile in feet)
T = 70 - %285.5%2F1000%29%2A5280
T = 70 - %2829040%2F1000%29
T = 70 - 29.04
T = 40.96 degrees at 1 mile

(b) At what altitude is the temperature freezing.
Assuming the surface temp is still 70, T = 32
32 = 70 - %285.5%2F1000%29h
32 - 70 = -%285.5%2F1000%29h
-38 = -%285.5%2F1000%29h
Write it;
%285.5%2F1000%29h = 38
5.5h = 38 * 1000
:
5.5h = 38000
h = 38000%2F5.5
h = 6,909 ft, the temp is freezing, which is what you got, way to go!
