Question 207621: Helping daughter with homework and my memory has gone. This is probably pretty easy but I just need the rule when working these out so here goes -
2b^3 with b=4, I had gone for 2x4 =8x4x4x4 = 512, wrong! Can someone give me the answer explain the process?
Thanks

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

You are confusing 2b%5E3 with %282b%29%5E3.
You would have been right if it had those parentheses.
But it doesn't.

Parentheses are very important in algebra.
When you put in parentheses an expression will
very often mean something entirely different.

ONLY the b gets raised to the 3rd power.

The 2 does not get raised to the third power because
it is not inside parentheses with the b

2b%5E3
2%284%29%5E3%29
2%2A4%2A4%2A4
