Is that rhetorical?
If there's something to be solved, then it has to be unknown.
For example, if the Area is length x width, and the length and width are given and you want to find the area, the area is the "unknown quantity."
You can write Area = ..., or you can save typing by writing A = l*w.
That applies to equations and inequalities.

An inequality can be 4<7. There's not much to do with that, other than just look at it.
