Question 205359This question is from textbook A pplied Statistics in Business and Economics, by Doane and Seward
: In the Big Ten (NCAA sports league) a sample showed that only 267 out of 584 freshman football players graduated within 6 years. (a)At a= .05 does this sample contradict the claim that at least half graduate within 6 years? State the hypothesis and decision rule , calculate the p- value and interpret it. DO you think the difference is important, as to significant?
I am not sure how to plug in the formula for the p-value

You can put this solution on YOUR website! In the Big Ten (NCAA sports league) a sample showed that only 267 out of 584 freshman football players graduated within 6 years. (a)At a= .05 does this sample contradict the claim that at least half graduate within 6 years? State the hypothesis and decision rule , calculate the p- value and interpret it. DO you think the difference is important, as to significant?
I am not sure how to plug in the formula for the p-value
-------------------------------------------------------
Ho: p >= 0.5 (Claim)
Ha: p < 0.5
------------------
sample proportion: 267/584 = 0.457..
test statistic: z(0.457) = (0.0457-0.5)/sqrt[0.5*0.5/584] = -0.0428/0.0207
= -2.068
P-value: P(z<-2.068)= 0.01932
Interpret the p-value: Only 1.93% of test results could have provided
stronger evidence for rejecting Ho.
The evidence for rejecting Ho is significance.
--------------------------------------------

Stan H.
