Question 205260: I am trying to figure out a "word" problem. It goes, Let W be all the words in English. A relation L is defined from W to the positivei ntegers that associates each word with the number of letters in the word. For example, L(the)=3 since the word the has three letters.
The question is:
a) What pairs in L have second coordinate 1?
b) Is this relation a function and explain.

If I am using a word sample, I cannot come up with any words that would have a second coordinate of 1. The word "I" = 1 or would any letter in the alphabet have a coordinate of 1 but the question is asking for pairs.
Thanks,
Lori

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
I am trying to figure out a "word" problem. It goes, Let W be all the words in English. A relation L is defined from W to the positivei ntegers that associates each word with the number of letters in the word. For example, L(the)=3 since the word the has three letters.
The question is:
a) What pairs in L have second coordinate 1?
All the pairs where the word has 1 letter, like I, or A.
(A,1) and (I,1)
---------------------------
b) Is this relation a function and explain.
Yes because each of the "words" has only one number paired with it.
