Question 20185: Dear Tutor,
For this problem I came up with the answer of 1248. I took 780 and divided it by 5/8.
2. 5/8 of the vehicles in the parking lot are cars. The rest are vans and trucks. If
there are 780 cars in the lot, how many total vehicles are in the lot?
No answer choices given.

For this problem I took 1600 and divided it by 2 and multiply it by 7.
3. A computer store sells seven times as many printers as fax machines. If sales for the
month totaled 1,600 pieces, how many printers were sold?
No answer choices given.
Am I doing solving these problems right.
Thank you,

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Hello There:
Your method and solution on the first problem are correct.
The second problem is not correct. If you divide 1600 by 2 and then multiply by 7, you get 5600. This is too high because only 1600 units were sold.
Let x = the number of fax machines sold
Now we can use this variable to write an expression for the number of printers sold.
7*x = the number of printers sold.
The total number of fax machines and printers sold is 1600.
x + 7*x = 1600
8*x = 1600
x = 1600/8 = 200
The number of printers sold is 7 times this amount.
7*200 = 1400
There were 1,400 printers sold.
