On the number line "negative" means two things:
1. it means "to the left of zero"; this is usually called negative.
2. it means "the opposite of" ; this is usually called minus.

So (-2)(-3) = -(2)(-3)
------------------------------
The negative on 3 means 3 to the left of zero.
The 2 doubles the distance to the left to 6 to the left of zero.
The negative to the left of 2(-3) means go the the opposite side
of 6 to the left, which would be 6 to the right, i.e. 6 to the right.
