To be brief, think of a negative number as a debt. If you double the debt(multiply by +2) it makes sense that it is twice as negative.

However if you multiply a debt by (-2) , it also makes sense that you now have positive double the value of debt.

This is very similar to a double negative in English. Do "not be not good"(bad), is a positive "be good".
