Let x be the number of dogs and y be the number of cats.
Given:
x+y=20------------> (1)
5+(1/4)x = y------> (2)
Multiplying 4 on both sides of (2),we have
20+x=4y.
x-4y=-20---------->(3)
Subtracting (3)from (1),we have
5y=40
y=8.
So Pate has 8 cats.
