You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A fish swim 8 miles downstream in two hours. he return upstream in 14 hours. how fast does the fish swim in still water ?
--------------------------
c = speed of the current
r = speed of the fish
use d = rt
8 = (r+c)*2 downstream
8 = (r-c)*14 upstream
--------------
2r + 2c = 8 --> 14r + 14c = 56
14r-14c = 8
14r+14c = 56
------------- Add the equations
28r = 64
r = 16/7 mph

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let f = fish's speed in still water in mi/hr
Let c = speed of current in mi/hr
------------
Given:
2 hrs = time to go 8 mi downstream
14 hrs = time to go 8 mi upstream
------------
8+=+%28f+%2B+c%29%2A2 mi
8+=+%28f+-+c%29%2A14 mi
and
(1) 8+=+2f+%2B+2c
(2) 8+=+14f+-+14c
Multiply both sides of (1) by 7 and
add the equations
(1) 56+=+14f+%2B+14c
(2) 8+=+14f+-+14c
28f+=+64
f+=+2.286 mi/hr answer
check answer:
8+=+%28f+%2B+c%29%2A2
8+=+%282.286+%2B+c%29%2A2
8+=+4.571+%2B+2c
2c+=+3.429
c+=+1.714 mi/hr
and
8+=+%28f+-+c%29%2A14
8+=+%282.286+-+1.714%29%2A14
8+=+.572%2A14
8+=+8.008 close enough
