You can put this solution on YOUR website! Cycle Paths, inc. makes bicycles, tricycles, and unicycles.
Last week they made 88 more bicycles than unicycles, and 5 times as many
tricycles as unicycles.
If they made 40 more bicycles than tricycles, how many unicycles did they make?
:
Let the no. of each be: b, t, u
:
Write an equation for each statement:
:
"they made 88 more bicycles than unicycles,
b = (u + 88)
:
"and 5 times as many tricycles as unicycles."
t = 5u
:
"If they made 40 more bicycles than tricycles,"
b = t + 40
:
In the above equation, replace b with (u+88) and t with (5u)
u + 88 = 5u + 40
:
88 - 40 = 5u - u
:
48 = 4u
u =
u = 12 unicyles
