complementary means they add to 90º

let f="1st angle" and s="2nd angle"

"Two angles are complementary" ___ f + s = 90º

"the sum of the measure of the first angle and 1/4 the second angle is 60 degrees" ___ f + (1/4 s) = 60º

subtracting the 2nd equation from the 1st equation ___ 3/4 s = 30º

dividing by 3/4 ___ s = 40º

substituting ___ f + 40º = 90º ___ f = 50º
