Question 196985: Hi there, I have been trying to tackle this homework question for a long time, it would be amazing if someone could help me with it. Thank you :)
Santiago is walking to school, which is straight down the road 500m from his home. He starts out by walking at 2m/s for 2 minutes until he gets to a stop light. He waits 30 seconds and then realizes that he has left an important essay at the front door, so he runs home at 5m/s. He had forgotten his keys, so he bangs on the door for 3 minutes until his brother Tomas answers. He grabs his essay and runs to school without stopping at 4m/s, arriving just as the warning bell rings.
Provide an equation for each situation and then using appropriate scales, draw thr graph that represents Santiago's journey. Include all equations and time intervals. (7 marks: 1 mark per equation and 2 marks for the graph)
Note: If you could help me with the equations, I could graph them myself. Thank you again in advance.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Santiago is walking to school, which is straight down the road 500m from his home.
Draw an x/y coordinate system.
Let the x-axis be "time"
Let the y-axis be "distance from the house".
-------------------
He starts out by walking at 2m/s for 2 minutes until he gets to a stop light.
Mark a point on the x axis for 120 seconds (2 minutes):
Equation on interval [0,120] is y = 2x
At the end of that time he is 240 meters from the house.
---------------
He waits 30 seconds so put a mark at x = 150
Equation on interval [120.150] is y = 240
------------------------
He returns home at 5m/s.
240 m at 5m/s takes 240/5 = 48 seconds
Put a mark on the x-axis at 198 seconds.
Equation on the interval [150,198] is y = -5x
------------------
He stands at the door for 3 min = 180 seconds.
Put a mark at 198+180 = 378 seconds
Equation on the interval [198,378] is y = 0
etc.
I hope you get the idea of how to continue.
