A friend of mine who had trouble with this stuff said that it helped a lot when a teacher explained it like this:
The equal sign is like a fence between two neighbors. The Constants are the numbers that live in the one house, and the Variable is Mr. X, that crabby, cranky guy that doesn't want anyone in his yard. He wants to be left alone and is not happy until he's by himself. It's a little silly and simplistic, but it works for equations of one variable (as well as the inequalities) and might help.
