You can put this solution on YOUR website! the distance between sue and dude ranch was 30 mi.straight across a rattlesnake- infested canyon instead of crossing the canyon, she hiked due north for a long time and then hiked due east for a shorter leg of the journey to the ranch. if she averaged 4 mph and it took her 9 hrs to get the ranch, then how far did she hike in a northerly direction?
------------
1st: Draw the picture.
2nd:
North DATA:
distance = N miles ; rate = 4 mph ; time = N/4 hrs
--------------
East DATA:
distance = E miles ; rate = 4 mph ; time = E/4 hrs
---------------------
N^2 = E^2 + 30^2
N/4 + E/4 = 9
---------------------
Rearrnge:
N + E = 36
So N = 36-E
Substitute to solve for E:
---
(36-E)^2 = E^2 + 30^2
36^2 -72E = 900
72E = 36^2-900
E = 5.5 miles (distance walked East)
Since N+E = 36, N = 30.5 miles (distance walked North)
------------------------------------
