Question 193304: Here's a word problem I bet you don't see very often. I don't understand the number of gun deaths in this country anyway, never mind how to predict them in an algebra problem. Please, I really need help on this one. Than-x
The equation y=-1777x+27,153 can be used to predict the number of gun deaths in the United States x years after 2000, that is, x=0 corresponds to 2000, x=3 corresponds to 2003, x=6 corresponds to 2006 and so on. Predict the number of gun deaths in 2006 and 2009. In what year will the number of gun deaths be 7606?
Than-x again, I'm very greatful.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
------------------
The number of deaths, y, is expressed as a function of year, x.
y = f(x) = -1777x + 27153
At x = 6:
y = -1777*6 + 27153
y = 16491 in 2006
-----------
At x = 9:
y = -1777*9 + 27153
y = 11160 in 2009
At x = 7606:
y = -5606*1777 = 27153
y = -9961862 + 27153
y = -9934709 (a negative # in 7606)
