You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A canoe leaves a boat ramp and travels at the rate of 8 km per hour.
A speed boat leaves an hour later and travels 20 km per hour.
How long will it take the speed boat to overtake the canoe?
:
Let t = travel time required for the speed boat to catch the canoe
then
(t+1) = travel time of the canoe when it's caught
:
When this happens they will have traveled the same distance
Write a distance equation from this fact; (dist = speed * time)
:
Speed boat dist = canoe dist
20t = 8(t+1)
20t = 8t + 8
20t - 8t = 8
12t = 8
t = 8%2F12
t = 2%2F3 hrs or 40 min

Check solution by finding the distances:
20 * .67 = 13.4
8 * 1.67 = 13.4
