Question 190298: There is a freight train that travels 30 mph. An express train travels 55 mph. The freight train is 300 miles ahead of the express train. How long will it take for the express train to overtake the freight train?
I found out that 25x=9000 is the equation, and I see how those numbers were gotten. 55-30 is 25 and 300 times 30 is 9000 but I do not understand how 25 helps or what it stands for and what this equation is representing. Thanks for your help.

You can do in a way that's complicated, but...
The express train gains on the freight train at the difference of their speeds, or 55-30 = 25 mph.
300/25 = 12 hours.
