Let t = time traveled in hours
.
Equation then is:
"distance traveled by 50 mph train" + "distance traveled by 65 mph train" = 285
50t + 65t = 285
115t = 285
t = 285/115
t = 2.4783 hours
or
2 hours and 29 minutes
