we can establish the equation as follows:
(x+y)*3 = 48 ========> x + y = 16 ......(1)
(x-y)*6 = 48 ========> x - y = 8 ......(2)
Take (1) add (2) we will have : 2x = 24
x = 12
Therefore y = 16-12
y = 4
Answer : the rate of the stream is 4 miles/hour.
