x + y = 74
x = y + 3
----------------
x + y = 74
x - y = 3
---------------
Add to solve for "x":
2x = 77
x = 77/2
------------------
Substitute to solve for Y":
(77/2) + y = 74
77 + 2y = 148
2y = 71
y = 71/2
---------------------------

put x is the large number and y is the small number
x + y = 74
x=3y then 3y+ y = 74
then y = 74/4 =18.5

==========> x = 3y= 18.5 * 3 = 55.5
Answer: 55.5 and 18.5
Are you afraid odd numbers???? just think logically and work it out and I think you know how to do it, don't you?
