You an use the Pythagorean theorem to solve this problem by first finding the length of the diagonal (hypotenuse) of the right triangle formed by two adjacent sides (legs) of the rectangular garden.
c%5E2+=+a%5E2%2Bb%5E2 where c = the hypotenuse (diagonal), a = 9 meters and b = 12 meters.
c%5E2+=+9%5E2%2B12%5E2
c%5E2+=+81%2B144
c%5E2+=+225 Take the square root of both sides.
c+=+15
So the length of the diagonal walk is 15 meters and the cost (C), at $10 per linear meter will be:
C+=+15%2A10
C+=+150
