: Hi,I'm trying to work out on my assignments and i want to find out if i did it right..CAn u please help me solve these two problems?WOuld appreciate your help very much.
1)Solve each system by the substitution method.If there is no solution or an infinite number of solutions, so state, and use set of notation to express solution set: x/4-y/4 = -1
x+4y = -9

2)Solve each system or state that the system is inconsistent or dependent.
x/2 = (y+8)/4
(x+3)/2= (y+5)/4

Thanks again in advance.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
1)Solve each system by the substitution method.If there is no solution or an infinite number of solutions, so state, and use set of notation to express solution set:
x/4-y/4 = -1
x+4y = -9
----------------
Modify the 1st equation.
x - y = -4
--------------
Substitute x = -9-4y into that equation to solve for "y"
-9-4y-y= -4
-5y = 5
y = -1
----------
substitute that into x = -9-4y to solve for "x"
x = -9 -4*-1 = -5
============================
2)Solve each system or state that the system is inconsistent or dependent.
x/2 = (y+8)/4
(x+3)/2= (y+5)/4
---------------------
Modify both equations:
2x = y+8
2(x+3) = y+5
------------------
Simplify:
x = (y+8)/2
2x + 6 = y+5
----------------
Substitute into the 2nd equation to solve for "Y":
---
2[(y+8)/2] + 6 = y+5
y+8 + 6 = y = 5
14 = 5
Contradiction:
No solution
