Question 185717: A bus leaves a station in Phila at 1 pm and travels east on the pa turnpike traveling at an avg 40 miles per hour. A motorcycle leaves the same bus station at 1:30 pm and travels the same route as the bus. If the motorcycle avgs 60 mph, at what time will the motorcycle pass the bus?
I need to define the variables and create 2 equations. I have the answer of 2:30 but cannot derive the equations I need to get to this answer.
Even my parents can't figure it out.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
40T=60(T-.5)
40T=60T-30
40T-60T=-30
-20T=-30
T=-30/-20
T=1.5 HOURS AFTER THE BUS LEAVES THE MOTORCYCLE WILL PASS THE BUS.
1:00+1:30=2:30 HOUR OF THE PASSING.
PROOF:
40*1.5=60(1.5-.5)
60=60*1
60=60
