Question 184314: I am stuck on this problem, any help will be greatly appreciated.
Two consecutive odd integers have a sum that is - 28.
Set up an equation algebraically and solve for these two integers. Give the definition for your variables, the equation to be solved, solve the equation, then express your conclusion. Found 2 solutions by stanbon, Alan3354:Answer by stanbon(75887) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Two consecutive odd integers have a sum that is - 28.
Set up an equation algebraically and solve for these two integers.
----------
Def: Every odd integer is one more than or 1 less than an even integer.
And even integers are always a multiple of 2.
------------------------------------------
1st odd integer: 2x+1
2nd odd integer: 2x+3
----------------------------
Equation:
2x+1 + 2x+3 = -28
4x + 4 = -28
4x = - 32
x = -8
-------------------
1st odd integer: 2x+1 = -16+1 = -15
2nd odd integer: 2x+3 = -16+3 = -13
