You can put this solution on YOUR website! how do i solve 5/8 x 18? the answer is 11 1/4 but i don't get how to do it.
is it 5/8 x 1/18 or x18/1 so then is it 90/144 or 144/8
------------------
Multiply the NUMs and the DENs. 18 is 18/1
So it's 5*18/8*1 = 90/8
Reduce it to 45/4
Then you can call it 11 1/4, tho there's no good reason to do that.
18 is eighteen whole things, while is one piece of something cut into 18 pieces - like the difference between enough pizza to feed a big party vs. one very skinny slice of pizza. You can always express any number as a fraction by setting that number over 1. That is because:
No matter what value you choose for a.
When you multiply fractions, multiply the numerator (the number on top of the fraction) times the numerator and the denominator (the number on the bottom) times the denominator. But it is usually easier if you eliminate common factors first.
Notice that the denominator on the left has 3 factors of 2 and the numerator on the right has 1 factor of 2. You can eliminate 1 factor of 2 from both numerator and denominator in this case.
4 goes into 45 eleven times with a remainder of 1, so:
If you want to check to see that this is true, first divide 45 by 4 on your calculator. Then divide 1 by 4 on your calculator and add the result to 11. You should get the same answer.
