Question 183611: you are on your way to the market with 8 chickens. when you get to the market the buyer tells you that he will only take all chickens that have the same weight. you know that all but 1 chicken weighs the same. you take the 8 chickens to the scales in the market, and notice you only have enough money to use the scales twice. using these scales only twice, how do you find the lighter chicken?
Answer by ptaylor(2198) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! OK
Put three chickens on each side:
If the scale balances, the lighter chicken is one of the two remaining and the next weighting will determine which one.
If the scale does not balance, then the lighter chicken has been isolated to three. Weigh two of the three chicks If the scale balances, the lighter chicken is the other one. If the scale does not balance, the lighter chicken will have been determined.
Hope this helps---ptaylor
