Question 18337: Dear Tutors,
I feel so stupid but I just don't understand percentages at all.
For example, I may get a question like: There were 150 people at a concert. 60 of the people there were female. What percentage were female. I know that you have to make a fraction with the two numbers 150/60 the divide then times by hundred. It's the times by a 100 bit I don't understand which bit are you supposed to times the numerator or the denominator???
I am 13 very confused and this is causing me to lose marks in my tests. When I ask my tutor she just says times by a hundred!! It is driving me crazy,
please help me I am desperate

You can put this solution on YOUR website! Hi Carly
you are heading in right direction
you need to divide 60 by 150
this gives 0.4 which means 0.4 of total were female.
To turn this to %age multiply by 100
to give 40%
So your sum would look like: = percentage
