If decreasing y by 40 percent, then increasing that by 130 percent gives you 966, what is the value of y ?
.
(y-.40y) + 1.3(y-.40y) = 966
(y -.40y)(1 + 1.3) = 966
(y -.40y)(2.3) = 966
(y -.40y) = 966/(2.3)
y(1 -.40) = 420
y(.60) = 420
y = 700

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
(y-.4y)+1.3(y-.4y)=966
:
.6y+1.3(.6y)=966
:
.6y+.78y=966
:
1.38y=966
