Call the smaller number a
Call the larger number b
given:
a+=+.25b
b+=+a+%2B+12
----------------
By substitution:
b+=+.25b+%2B+12
Subtract .25b from both sides
.75b+=+12
b+=+16
and
a+=+.25b
a+=+.25%2A16
a+=+4
The smaller number is 4 and the larger is 16
