distance = 12 miles ; time = x-(3/4) hr; rate = d/t = 12/(x-(3/4))

Equation:
jim rate = jon rate + 5
12/(x-(3/4)) = (5/x) + 5
48/(4x-3) = (5 + 5x)/x
48x = 5(x+1)(4x-3)
48x = 5[4x^2 +x - 3]
20x^2 - 43x - 15 = 0

x = [43 +- sqrt(43^2 - 4*20*-15)]/40
x = [43 + 55.22]/40
x = 2.455 mph
