You can put this solution on YOUR website!
18) -12x^2 + 5x + 2 = 0
:
a) find the value of the discriminant
discrim = b^2 - 4*a*c
In this equation: a=-12; b=5; c=2, so we have
d = 5^2 + 4 * -12 * 2
d = 25 - (-96)
d = 25 + 96
d = +121
:
b) describe the number and type of roots
d > 0 therefore, two different real roots
:
c) find the exact solutions by using the Quadratic Formula
x+=+%28-b+%2B-+sqrt%28+b%5E2-4%2Aa%2Ac+%29%29%2F%282%2Aa%29+
we already found the value of the discriminant, so we can write it
x+=+%28-5+%2B-+sqrt%28121%29%29%2F%282%2A-12%29+
Two solutions:
x+=+%28-5+%2B+11%29%2F%28-24%29+
x+=+6%2F%28-24%29
x+=+-1%2F4
and
x+=+%28-5+-+11%29%2F%28-24%29+
x+=%28-16%29%2F%28-24%29
x+=+2%2F3
