You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Mr. Perry Winkle said "I am twice as old as my son. Twenty Four years ago, I was four times as old as my son was" How old is Mr Perry Winkle?
:
Let x = P.W.'s age now
Let s = son's age now
:
It says,"I am twice as old as my son."; therefore:
x = 2s
or
s = .5x
:
"Twenty Four years ago, I was four times as old as my son was"
x - 24 = 4(s - 24)
x - 24 = 4s - 96
x = 4s - 96 + 24
x = 4s -72
Replace s with (.5x)
x = 4(.5x) - 72
x = 2x - 72
x - 2x = -72
-x = -72
x = 72 yrs is P.W.'s age now
:
:
Check solution in the statement (s = 36):
72 - 24 = 4(36 - 24)
48 = 4(12)
