How much did she pay for the books.

You are told that

%28x%2B5%29%2A+4+=+8x+
4x+%2B+20+=+8x+
20+=+4x
5+=+x
She could buy 5 Reference books or (5+5)=10 Assessment books.
In either case, she spends 8*5=40 OR 10*4=40
