Question 178656: Hi! I got a quiz back, and found a question wrong. My teacher won't explain why it's wrong and I am having trouble getting it. Here's the question:
The Mariana Trench (or Marianas Trench) is the deepest part of the world's oceans, and the deepest location on the surface of the earth's crust. It has a maximum depth of about 36,201 feet, and is located in the western North Pacific Ocean, to the east and south of the Mariana Islands, near Guam. Write an inequality that describes the height h (in feet) of all the ocean depths.
My teacher is not picky, so we don't have to write ft after everything, as long as we use the right variable and answer the right question. So my answer was the following:
0>_h>_-36201.
I used _ after the >'s to show "Greater than or Equal To" Since I don't know of a command to do that. Her answer was this:
h>-36201
If it specifies All the ocean depths, shouldn't it be greater than or equal to? She makes up her own answer keys, but insists that hers is correct. Why is her's right and mine wrong?

You can put this solution on YOUR website! ask her one simple question and depending on how she responds you may have her in a bind. Ask her, "Can there be any ocean in the world that is has a depth of 36201 ft. If she says yes, then she has admitted it should have an equals sign included. If she says no ,then ask her why the problem states that the maximum ocean depth is at -36201 and yet that depth is excluded according to her answer. I have never heard of maximums or minimums that were excluded in a problem like this, hence I agree with you. Aside from that unless she has some caveat to her answer +25000 feet is greater than -36201 so I guess that could be an ocean depth. Did she not qualify the other end of the spectrum? Perhaps you just left that part out since you didnt have a question on that
