You can put this solution on YOUR website!
lets call x the amount of land
:
(1/2)x+(1/3)x+(1/9)x+1=x
:
(9/18)x+(6/18)x+(2/18)x+1=x
:
(17/18)x+1=x
:
(1/18)x=1
:
highlight%28x=18%29acres

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let "x" be the total acrege.
---------------
Equation:
acres - acres = acres
x -[(1/2)+(1/3)+(1/9)]x = 1
x -[(9+6+2)/18]x = 1
x - (17/18)x = 1
(1/18)x = 1
x = 18 acres

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let a= the total acres of land
%281%2F2%29%2Aa+%2B+%281%2F3%29%2Aa+%2B+%281%2F9%29%2Aa+%2B+1+=+a
Multiply both sides by 2%2A3%2A9
3%2A9%2Aa+%2B+2%2A9%2Aa+%2B+2%2A3%2Aa+%2B+2%2A3%2A9+=+2%2A3%2A9%2Aa
27a+%2B+18a+%2B+6a+%2B+54+=+54a
54a+-+27a+-+18a+-+6a+=+54
54a+-+51a+=+54
3a+=+54
a+=+18
The oldest child gets 18%2F2+=+9 acres
The 2nd child gets 18%2F3+=+6 acres
The youngest gets 18%2F9+=+2 acres
9+%2B+6+%2B+2+=+17
There is 18+-+17+=+1 acre left for the Mother
