Question 177801: Alan's gas tank is 1/4 full.After he buys 6 gallons of gas,it is 5/8 full.How many gallons can Alan's tank hold? Found 2 solutions by ptaylor, MathTherapy:Answer by ptaylor(2198) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Let x=amount of gallons that Alan's tank can hold
So x/4 +6=5x/8 multiply each term by 8
2x+48=5x subtract 2x from each side
2x-2x+48=5x-2x collect like terms
3x=48 divide each side by 3
x=16 gal-------------------------------amount that gas tank holds
CK
(1/4)*16=4
4+6=10
10=(5/8)*16
10=10

You can put this solution on YOUR website! Let the amount of gas when Alan’s tank is full is g
Since at the beginning the tank was full, and when 6 gallons is added, it was full, then ( . g) + 6 = .
Therefore, .
Therefore, .
20g = 8g + 192
12g = 192
g = 16
Therefore, the gas tank holds 16 gallons.
